OCEANN ENT
The paranasal sinuses are air-filled spaces that surround the nasal cavity. They are usually in pairs and include the maxillary (under each eye), sphenoid (behind each eye), ethmoid (between the eyes), and frontal (above each eye).
Each sinus contains membranes that produce mucus, which help to lubricate the nose and filter out dust and microorganisms. Mucus commonly leaves the sinus through a small opening and drains into your nose.
Sinusitis refers to inflammation of one or more or the eight paranasal sinuses located along and above your nose. When the sinus lining becomes inflamed and swollen, the opening from the sinus into your nasal cavity gets blocked. This makes it difficult for mucus produced in the sinus to drain, leading to build-up and possible infections. Sinusitis often appears together with rhinitis in a condition known as rhinosinusitis.
